Councillors Back Liberal Democrat Proposals

by John Shaw on 17 January, 2013

At the Full Council meeting on Thursday 10th January, Councillors of all parties and none rallied behind three Liberal Democrat proposals.

It was a good night for us with three motions I proposed or seconded being passed by the Council.  Two motions were passed near unanimously and the third split the Conservative group, attracting enough for the recommendation to go through.

Firstly, I am pleased that we are moving forward on the investigation of what happened at the Council that ended up with the Cabinet losing a judicial review. Hopefully we are now getting the end of the process.

Secondly I welcome the cross party support for a Lib Dem initiative which could provide more affordable housing.  The need for housing is great and it is often so frustrating that planning permissions are given but it is years before houses are built.  It puts pressure on less suitable sites to be brought forward to plug the gap.
The Council will now look at how it can offer to buy houses to ensure they are built.

Thirdly, progress has been made in increasing the budget for providing dropped kerbs and other improvement that will improve mobility for residents with disabilities.

People want politicians to work together and this is a good example of how the Liberal Democrats can be a catalyst for that.
